What I've been missing all these years

新年快樂! Chinese New Year has officially ended after a week of celebrating, eating, and togetherness. I had a wonderful few days in Tainan with my relatives and I realized what I've been missing out all these years. The last time I was in Taiwan for Chinese New Year was when I was 7 years old. Ever since then, Chinese New Year has never been the same with school and homework. This entry will be a mix of some Chinese (for my Chinese reading cousins) and English, but mostly English, since I type too slowly in Chinese. 我會努力的用中文寫作!

I had a swell time with all my family, aunts, uncles, cousins, and cousins' kids. I have a large extended family. My dad has 6 siblings and my mom 4. Each aunt/uncle had 2 or 3 children and the majority of my cousins have one to three kids now. It was unfortunate that not all the relatives could make it back to Madou (where my Dad is from) to celebrate with us. However, this New Years was certainly memorable and has reminded me the importance of family and tradition. 這次過年提醒我家人和傳統的重要。我的確忘了有大家庭的感覺。

First of all - the tradition (傳統). There are several steps involved in Chinese New Year to ensure prosperity as well as to appease one's ancestors. The day before New Year (除夕), one must prepare food to "feed" the ancestors at a special table, usually adorned with Buddhist/Taoist deity statuettes and icons. Incense (香 - I hope I used the right word) is required and people usually speak or think while holding the incense about future prosperity or about deceased family members or family members in need. After this step, or 拜拜 (bai bai), there is a huge meal with all the family members (of the male's side of course) followed by red envelopes from the older generations to the younger. In my family, we often have extra performance time for the youngest generation to earn more money.

The tradition of family being together is wonderful - it's like Christmas. However, some of the steps and superstitions involved are not supported by my generation. I watched an interesting TV show which features the opinions of both the young and older generations. It's true that some of the procedures involved in setting the table of food for your ancestors are too detailed and seemingly unnecessary. I, for one, know nothing about placement of food or why we need to cook so many dishes to appease the dead. I know it's tradition, and I suppose when I'm older with a family of my own, it'll be nice to carry on something similar in a smaller, less wasteful scale.

My favourite part of my renewed Chinese New Year experience was the time spent with family. 我過年最喜歡跟家人一起的時間. It's as if I have long lost cousins or something because a cousin I didn't even know existed showed up with his two kids in middle school. As aforementioned, several of my cousins have children now and many little ones I have not yet seen. It was nice to have children's energy around the house and also quite amusing. Best of all however, was spending time with my cousins. 我最喜歡跟堂表哥姐一起玩The uncles and aunts, cousins, and cousins' children on my mom's side of the family are all very close. 真的很有團結性. All us cousins and their children get along so well and there is always so much ongoing laughter and conversation. One of my cousins whom I was always close with but have not seen for several years, was especially kind and generous to me - taking me out to fun activities such as a famous night market and setting off fireworks (煙火) by the beach.

In addition to seeing my relatives, I spent a lot of quality time with my parents and sister - which does not happen too often. My dad took us to many wonderful places and I enjoyed being part of the simpler life in the country. It all seems so innocent, laid back, and friendly. I actually enjoyed going to the rural areas more than the crowded urban areas for the scenery and tranquility. It's a difficult feeling to put into words or even a photograph, but there is a distinct rural/countryside sense that is uniquely Taiwanese. It's the feeling of looking out into the rice paddies, vegetable fields, or orchards. Bike riding on a small narrow road with wild dogs at your feet and mis-parked cars all around you with grandmothers sitting out in front of their houses fanning themselves. It's the sound of children playing baseball. The smell of soil, insects, fertilizer, and yes sewage around you while the hot sun releases its warmth upon you.

I digress. One of the main realizations from the last few days changed my initial perception upon arrival two weeks ago - that I did not belong and shall never live in Taiwan as long as I live. Now I am overwhelmed with the sense of pride of being Taiwanese, the sense of belonging to a large extended family with relatives who care for one another, and the sense of being respectful to tradition and the prior generations who have worked so hard to raise large families.

I'm sincerely grateful for my large family. Before, I never really missed Taiwan all that much. I was too absorbed in my own life abroad. Now, I will do my best to make it back once a year no matter where life takes me because I need to make up for all the years lost. 不管我多忙, 我以後真的會努力每年回來一次, 因為我需要充滿我以前失去跟家人的時間.

à l’aise

It's been quite a stressful summer. Thus, I'm glad to be finishing off summer in Vancouver. Everytime I'm back, I see the City in a different light. My experiences away from home always bring me back to the same conclusion - there's no place like Vancouver. I'm always appreciative of this City - be it rain or shine, the City is always green, and I will never tire of looking north at the Coast Mountains. On the plane from Toronto to Vancouver, I sat next to a guy from Brampton who goes to Uvic for mechanical engineering. He kept asking, "Why on earth would you leave Vancouver to go to Ontario?" I laughed it off and thought to myself, if I haven't left, I wouldn't appreciate Vancouver as much as I do now.

Although I have a ton of work and studying to do in my last few days in Vancouver, just being out and about brings an indescribable inner peace. Though my personal goals may not bring me back to Vancouver permanently, I am appreciative and fortunate to call this City home.

Pictures to come.

pro-cras-ti-na-tion

Seems like this term, I'm getting really good at procrastination. I have to finish my law comment paper by Sunday and I've barely started. It's minimum 800 words but I have such a hard time with it. This is my second one so hopefully it's better.

I slacked off my whole reading week back in VANCOUVER with the Olympics. Can I get a "woot woot"?! I was so happy to see my city, yes my city, in the spotlight. In fact, I was getting a little possessive, sharing my city with the massive crowds. Despite the technical difficulties experienced at the opening ceremonies, all my other experiences were extremely positive. The main downside were all the lineups, but those were inevitable. I got to spend time with so many of my friends and met some new ones as well. People came together to sing O Canada on the Canada Line and in the streets. The country feels unified, and Canadians are finally showing some patriotism, even if it only for the duration of these few weeks.

I'm back to life as usual. I'm getting really sick and tired of school. I've completely lost my motivation. I need a boost. D, where are you?

be merry

It's been an extremely chill day. I still went into work today to pack some things up and return my pass, and say good bye to the people who still went in. It ended up being me playing with my boss's adorable son (decked out in his Burberry coat lol), and chatting the time away with coworkers. It makes me sad that I have to leave as I'm just getting to know everyone.

I'm going home tonight. My flight's not until 10:45pm. I'm writing this as I'm waiting to have dinner. I made my special seafood pasta with wine sauce, mashed potatoes, and roasted zucchini. Oh yeah, there's also some booze. White wine, gin, and honey lagers. Not gonna get drunk before my flight though!

Anyway, I'm really glad this term turned out so well. I learned a lot about myself and about my future. I really need this break before I head back to school though. I hope everyone has a safe and fun-filled holiday with family and friends!
I'll be home for Christmas, and watching SHERLOCK HOLMES.

It's August!

I can't believe it's already August. Time really flies when you're doing nothing and having fun at the same time. I've been keeping myself busy these past few days but "busy" doesn't really mean my schedule is jam-packed and I'm running all over the place.

It's nice not to have so much structure in my life. Spontaneity happens and my mind feels like it's almost in a "zen" mode. It's been nice catching up with friends and I have yet to see any family. My madre is arriving in a few days so I'll be asking to be taken care of :P

In my spare time at night, I've been watching lots of DVDs and VHS as well. Here are some of the flicks I've caught lately.
  • Becoming Jane (surprisingly good)
  • Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (finally!)
  • In Good Company (I really enjoyed this one)
  • Little Women (one of my faves!)
  • Monster in Law (pretty funny. But still not a fan of JLo)
  • Chasing Liberty (enough said)
  • Two Weeks Notice (terrible script but I love Hugh Grant)
  • Hoodwinked (love it!)

I watched "In Good Company" last night. I have a thing for Topher Grace and I believe him to be excellent in this film. The "out with the old and in with the new" theme was written into the script gracefully and carried out by the actors in the same manner. The themes are obvious and that was the kind of movie I needed to watch. I don't want to be analyzing the movie to death and not get anywhere. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend. It relates to me in the way that I don't always know what I want to do and question my ability and passion.

Now that it's August, time is really going to fly. I'll be back in Toronto in a blink of an eye. I can already predict how I will feel when time comes since I've been through it so many times. But it's safe to say that there are some great things awaiting my return.

Cheers
